What Is the Rough-In Stage of Construction?
Before the tile, paint, and trim go in, there’s a critical phase that sets the stage for how your home will function for years to come. It’s called the rough-in stage of construction, and while it might not be glamorous, it’s where the behind-the-scenes magic happens.
Here’s what rough-in means, why it matters, and how Buffum Homes brings you into the process, because what’s behind the walls should work just as beautifully as what’s on them.
What Is Involved in Rough-In?
When people think of a beautiful home, they often picture countertops, tile, cabinets, flooring, and paint. And while those features absolutely make an impact, there’s a whole world of work happening behind the scenes that’s just as essential to the quality and comfort of your home. At Buffum Homes, we believe in building smart from the inside out, and that starts with the rough-in stage.
The rough-in stage happens after your home is framed but before drywall goes up. It’s when the major mechanical systems are installed—systems that will support your home for decades to come:
- Plumbing: Pipes for water lines, drains, and venting are installed, including setups for your kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry room.
- Electrical: Wiring is run for outlets, switches, lighting, appliances, and any smart features you’ve chosen.
- HVAC: Ductwork, returns, and vents are put in place to create a comfortable and energy-efficient environment.
- Insulation: This is added after the mechanicals but before drywall, and it plays a huge role in keeping your home quiet and comfortable through all of Michigan’s seasons.
This phase may not be glamorous, but it lays the groundwork for everything else. It’s where safety, functionality, and long-term performance all come together.
Why the Rough-In Stage Matters
Once the drywall is up, changes to plumbing, electrical, or HVAC become much more complicated and costly. That’s why rough-in isn’t a boring construction step. It’s a major opportunity to get things right from the start.
Every wire, vent, pipe, and connection is inspected, tested, and double-checked to ensure it’s up to code and built to last. Our team takes this part of the build seriously because it has a lasting effect on your home’s performance and your day-to-day comfort.
Where Clients Can Get Involved
Just because you won’t see most of what’s behind the walls doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a say in it. At Buffum Homes, we build walkthroughs into our process during the rough-in phase so clients can be part of the decision-making.
Want a floor outlet for a floating sofa? A custom shower with multiple heads? A dedicated line for an EV charger in the garage? Thinking about adding extra outlets in the pantry or basement for future use? These are all things we can fine-tune during rough-in.
Our walkthrough gives you the chance to walk through your framed home and visually confirm or adjust the placement of outlets, switches, lighting, plumbing fixtures, and HVAC elements. It’s a unique opportunity to ensure your home is set up to function exactly how you envision it before the walls are closed in.
When the Rough-In Happens
The rough-in phase usually starts shortly after framing and lasts until insulation is complete. This typically falls about 1–2 months into the build timeline, depending on weather and scheduling.
While it’s not as flashy as seeing cabinetry or countertops go in, this is one of the most important and strategic moments of your build—and one where your input can make a big difference.
Building It Right from the Inside Out
At Buffum Homes, our homes not only look great but also work well, from the foundation to the finish work. The rough-in stage may not be front and center once your home is complete, but its importance can’t be overstated. It’s where the structure, safety, and flow of your home really start to come together.
And with client walkthroughs built into this phase, we make sure you’re part of that process. Because even though what’s behind the walls might not be the most visible part of your home, it’s what holds everything together—and we want it to reflect your lifestyle just as much as your countertops and tile choices do.
